RIU Hotels & Resorts is a Spanish family-owned hotel chain. The company's business is focused on the holiday hotel sector and over 70% of its establishments offer an all-inclusive service. As of 2014, it was the 30th largest hotel chain in the world.[4] As of 2020, it had 98 locations in 19 countries, 31,270 employees, and 4.9 million customers.[2]
History
[edit]RIU Hotels & Resorts is a Spanish[5] hotel chain founded by the Riu family as a small holiday firm in 1953 in Mallorca, the first hotel being Riu San Francisco in Mallorca.[6][5][7] The RIU Hotels & Resorts chain is still run by the Riu family's third generation.[7] It was 49% owned by TUI until the Riu family retook full ownership of the company in May 2021.[8]

[edit]According to RIU's website, RIU operates 103 locations, of which 34 are in Spain and 21 in Mexico.[1] As of 2016, RIU had hotels in Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Germany, Bulgaria, Turkey, Tunisia, Morocco, United States, Mexico, Jamaica, Bahamas, Aruba, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Panama, Cape Verde, Mauritius, St. Martin, Senegal, United Arab Emirates and Sri Lanka (2016).[9]
